He was born on January 28th, 1992 in the city of Junagadh in the Indian state of Gujarat. Munawar’s full name is Munawar Iqbal Faruqui. The police and a group of men from a Hindu organization called Hind Rakshak Sangathan stormed the venue in Indore where Faruqui was performing one of his shows as part of his nation-wide tour titled “Dongri to Nowhere.” They claimed that Faruqui had made indecent remarks about Hindu deities and Home Minister Amit Shah in his comedy show. On February 5, 2021, after Faruqui had been detained in jail for a total of 35 days, the Supreme Court decided to release him on bond.

Threats to venue vandalism by Hindu right-wing organisations: After his arrest in January 2021, Faruqui’s stand-up comedy concerts were challenged in numerous places as a result of threats to venue vandalism made by Hindu right-wing outfits. The month of December 2021 saw K. T. Rama Rao, the Information Technology Minister of Telangana and the Working President of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), invited Faruqui and the comedian Kunal Kamra to perform in Hyderabad.

As a result of this invitation, Rama Rao was criticized by Dharmapuri Arvind, a BJP Member of Parliament from Telangana. Dharmapuri Arvind has issued a threat that the performance of the comedian Munawar Faruqui, which was scheduled to take place in Hyderabad on January 9th, 2022, will not be permitted.
